[MASTERCLASS] YouTube Shorts Algorithm Explained: Maximizing Retention Metrics

Unlike long-form YouTube where CTR (Click-Through Rate) is king, Shorts rely entirely on two metrics: AVD (Average View Duration) and the "Viewed vs. Swiped Away" ratio. If you want to grow a faceless channel fast, you must engineer your videos for these two data points.

The Golden Metrics to Hit:
  • Viewed vs. Swiped: You need at least 70% of people to choose to watch the video when it appears in the Shorts feed. If 50% swipe away instantly, the video is dead.
  • Average View Duration: For a 30-second video, you need over 100% retention (meaning people loop it and watch it again).

How to Hack the Metrics:
1. The 3-Second Visual Hook
Text on screen is not enough. The background video must have rapid motion in the first 3 seconds (e.g., someone falling, a fast zoom-in, a satisfying cutting motion) to stop the thumb from swiping.

2. The Perfect Loop
Write your script so the last sentence connects seamlessly into the first sentence. Remove any "breaths" or pauses in the audio at the end of the video. The viewer should watch the first 3 seconds of the video again before realizing it restarted. This pushes your retention over 100%.
