Architecting Automated Knowledge Dissemination via Custom XenForo 2.x REST APIs

Integrating modern AI pipelines (such as OpenAI GPT-4o, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, or autonomous agent workflows via LangChain) directly into a XenForo community environment requires a robust, scalable, and secure bridge. While XenForo provides built-in REST API endpoints out of the box, building a custom endpoint tailored specifically for AI Agent Orchestration allows you to perform advanced dynamic pre-processing, automatic thread prefix assignment, BBCode auto-formatting, and custom user attribution on the fly.

In this technical guide, we build an enterprise-grade solution that pairs a custom XenForo PHP REST Controller with a Python AI dispatch service.

System Architecture & Workflow
  • AI Generation Layer: Ingests raw data or prompts, runs analysis via LLM, and structures output into standard XenForo BBCode.
  • API Gateway / Middleware: Dispatches secure JSON payloads containing thread metadata, target node IDs, and dynamic custom field attributes.
  • XenForo Custom Add-on Endpoint: Accepts the payload, enforces API scope authorization, runs thread creation services natively through `\XF\Service\Thread\Creator`, and returns explicit thread references.

Part 1: Custom XenForo REST API Controller (PHP Add-on)

This backend snippet defines a dedicated REST controller action inside your XenForo add-on structure (`src/addons/Vendor/AiBridge/Api/Controller/ThreadEngine.php`). It handles payload validation, user elevation, and thread instantiation.

Part 2: Python AI Pipeline & API Payload Engine

The script below demonstrates an automated worker taking generated content from an LLM service, automatically wrapping the formatted structure into XenForo-compliant BBCode, and dispatching it to your newly created custom endpoint.

Key Implementation Considerations
  • Scope Allocation: Ensure your API key generated in XenForo Admin Control Panel (`/admin.php?api-keys/`) has explicitly granted access to the custom route controller along with thread:write privileges.
  • User Context Impersonation: The code uses `\XF::asVisitor()` to execute permission checks cleanly under the specific bot account (`user_id`), ensuring proper post counts, user permissions, and thread watch preferences apply.
  • Format Consistency: Always pre-parse or validate AI-generated text to prevent malformed BBCode tags prior to sending HTTP payloads to your endpoint.
