Architectural Overview

Automating content generation and forum publishing requires a seamless bridge between modern AI endpoints and legacy/modern forum engines. XenForo 2.2+ provides a powerful native REST API, but directly coupling AI services (like OpenAI, Claude, or custom LLMs) to your database creates instability.

This technical guide demonstrates how to build an enterprise-grade middleware pipeline in Node.js that ingests dynamic AI output, formats it into strict XenForo BBCode specifications, handles authentication, and automatically creates threads in target forum nodes with non-blocking execution.

1. XenForo API Authentication Setup

Before writing integration code, you must configure appropriate credentials inside your XenForo Admin Control Panel:

  • Navigate to Admin CP > Admin API Keys.
  • Click Add API Key and select Super admin key (recommended for background daemons) or a dedicated user key.
  • Assign the required scope: thread:write and thread:read.
  • Note the API Key and the API User ID under whose identity automated threads will be posted.

2. Engine Workflow & Payload Strategy

Our middleware layer performs three critical jobs:
1. Ingests structured JSON payloads from AI automation orchestrators (e.g., n8n, Make, or custom microservices).
2. Converts raw AI outputs or markdown directly into XenForo-compliant BBCode markup.
3. Dispatches URL-encoded requests to the /api/threads/ endpoint while enforcing retry logic and rate limit prevention.

3. Core Middleware & Dispatcher Code

Below is the complete production-ready middleware script. Unlock the raw source code below to inspect the implementation.

4. Key Implementation Details

  • Content-Type Handling: XenForo REST endpoints expect application/x-www-form-urlencoded body params by default. Using raw JSON headers without proper body parsing can lead to validation errors.
  • Header Authentication: Always supply X-Api-Key and X-Api-User in request headers rather than URL params to keep server logs clean and secure.
  • BBCode Engine Parsing: XenForo natively renders BBCode tags such as ,
    Code:
[/COLOR], and [COLOR=orange][COLOR][/COLOR]. Integrating a lightweight converter function ensures AI output formats cleanly without breaking thread styling.

This architecture ensures high stability, low latency, and full auditability when powering automated forum networks via custom AI services.
